Home Remedies for Sick Chickens

I want to share with you some safe and natural home remedies to help your sick chickens bounce back to their happy and healthy selves. I know we aren't going to rush a chicken to the vet, even if there were vets within a three-hour drive that would look at them, so we have to take care of our animals ourselves.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a versatile remedy known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Add a tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to a gallon of your chicken's drinking water to promote a healthy gut and improve overall immune function.

Electrolyte Solution

Dehydration is a common issue in sick chickens. Prepare an electrolyte solution and administer this solution to the affected chicken via a dropper or in their drinking water to rehydrate and replenish essential nutrients.

Garlic and Oregano

Garlic and oregano are natural immune boosters and can help combat respiratory issues. Crush a few garlic cloves and mix them with oregano. Add this mixture to their feed or sprinkle it in their living area to promote respiratory health.

Echinacea

Echinacea is known for its immune-stimulating properties. Create a herbal infusion by steeping echinacea roots or leaves in hot water. Allow the infusion to cool before administering it to your sick chicken to support its immune system.

Probiotics and Yogurt

Probiotics are beneficial for gut health. Offer your sick chickens plain, unsweetened yogurt containing live cultures to promote a healthy balance of gut flora and aid digestion.

Plus, it's a treat they will LOVE, my flock will circle an individual yogurt cup and eat it until it's gone. You can also freeze it for a cool treat on a hot day to help with overheating and dehydration too.

Warm Compresses

For chickens with localized injuries or swelling, apply a warm compress to the affected area. The warmth can help alleviate discomfort and promote healing. A warm bath in a tote can be the best way to do this. I find our chickens will relax in it after a few minutes.

Isolation and Rest

Isolate sick chickens from the rest of the flock to prevent the spread of illness. Provide a quiet and comfortable space for them to rest and recover without stress.

Even with illness or injury that is not going to spread, it's important to isolate because chickens can be horrible to a chicken with a weakness, and can even kill it.

You can use a large brooder with airflow cut into it, a dog crate/kennel, or whatever you have on hand.

Caring for sick chickens can be challenging, but with the right home remedies and attention, you can aid their recovery and prevent further complications. While these remedies can be helpful, it's essential to consult a veterinarian if your chicken's condition does not improve or if the symptoms worsen.

Remember to maintain a clean and hygienic living environment and provide a balanced diet to support your flock's health. With love, care, and these natural remedies, your feathered friends will be back on their feet in no time!
