Crop Rotation

A crop rotation plan can prevent the buildup of pests and diseases in your garden. Rotating crops within different plant families disrupts the lifecycle of specific pests, making it harder for them to establish a stronghold.

Additionally, rotating crops can help maintain soil fertility and reduce the risk of nutrient depletion.

Take it from me, last year I did not rotate my plants and only got about a third of the harvest that I normally would have. The pests were unbelievable and it felt like I couldn't get ahead of them.

Companion Planting

Companion planting involves strategically placing certain plants together to promote natural pest control.

For example, marigolds emit a scent that repels aphids, while basil can deter mosquitoes and flies. Planting aromatic herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and mint alongside your vegetables can confuse pests and attract beneficial insects that prey on them.

This is also beneficial in giving you fresh herbs and one less place you need to carry either your watering can or hose.

Attract Beneficial Insects

Encouraging beneficial insects to inhabit your garden is an effective form of pest control. Ladybugs, lacewings, and predatory wasps are natural predators of garden pests such as aphids and caterpillars.

To attract these beneficial insects, incorporate diverse flowering plants into your garden, such as daisies, cosmos, and yarrows, which provide nectar and pollen as food sources.

You can also buy ladybugs to add them to your garden when you have pests. They are a great, easy solution that only requires a little work: just keep a little dish of water near the plants you want to keep the ladybugs near.

Homemade Pest Sprays

Homemade pest sprays can be a safe and natural way to control pests in your garden.

A simple mixture of water, liquid soap, and cayenne pepper can help deter insects like ants and caterpillars.

Neem oil is an effective organic pesticide that disrupts the growth and feeding patterns of many garden pests. Be sure to test any spray on a small portion of your plants before applying it widely as it can burn some foliage.

Physical Barriers

Creating physical barriers is an excellent way to protect your garden from larger pests.

Fencing can keep out deer, rabbits, and other animals that may damage your crops.

Floating row covers are lightweight fabrics that can shield plants from insects while allowing sunlight, air, and water to pass through. These covers are especially useful for protecting young seedlings.
