This sandwich bread recipe is delicious and perfect for sandwiches and toast in the morning. I used to make all our bread by hand, and I enjoyed it. But as with life, other things needed to be done and I didn't have as much time to make it all by hand anymore, which is why I started using a bread machine.

This is my tried and true, use it multiple times a week bread machine recipe. I have been using this recipe for quite a few years. My kids' love it, and Blake and I enjoy it. It is a light, fluffy loaf of bread.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 tsp yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 3 cups white flour
  • 1 tsp salt

I add everything to my bread machine pan in the order in which I listed them. Salt kills yeast, so you don't want your salt to touch your active yeast.

Now you want to add the three cups of flour, and then add the salt on top.

On my bread machine, I have too many options. There are more settings than I will probably ever use, but do hope to use. For this recipe, I use my quick bread setting. It is one hour and 43 minutes long for the 2-pound loaf that this recipe makes.

If you do not have that option or prefer to use the three-hour option, reduce the amount of yeast to one teaspoon.

I have my loaf in the light color setting.

Remove with oven mitts right away to prevent condensation from building up and making the bottom of the bread loaf soggy.

Let it cool a little bit before attempting to cut the bread. I like to use an electric knife to cut our bread. It cuts faster, and you can cut the bread sooner than you would be able to with a traditional bread knife.

This recipe does work well for the delayed setting as well. It's not something I use often, but occasionally, if we are going to need bread for breakfast and I don't want to (a) get up early to start it or (b) risk forgetting to start it if I do get up early in the morning.

My kids will eat almost the whole loaf of bread when it is finished first. Between butter and peanut butter, there is nothing better than fresh bread. It might not be as great as traditional bread, but this is still better than a bread machine.

Plus, homemade bread makes the best french toast.

Edit to add: we have been making this recipe for years, no changes. Well, one change, my middle daughter is incharge of making the bread for the house now. It's a good, easy chore for kids. If she messes up something, which does happen when learning something new, then the loaf of bread goes out to the chickens. No harm.

Frequently Asked Questions About Making Bread Machine Sandwich Bread

Why did my bread collapse in the bread machine? Bread usually collapses because there was too much yeast, too much liquid, or not enough salt. Over-proofing causes the dough to rise too high and then sink during baking. Try slightly reducing the yeast (by ¼ teaspoon), measuring liquids carefully, and making sure your salt isn’t accidentally skipped.

Should I put wet or dry ingredients in first in a bread machine? Most bread machines work best when you add liquids first, then dry ingredients, with the yeast added last on top of the flour. This keeps the yeast from activating too early. However, always check your machine’s manual, as some models recommend a different order.

Why is my bread machine bread dense or heavy? Dense bread is often caused by expired yeast, too much flour, or not enough kneading. Make sure your yeast is fresh, measure flour using the spoon-and-level method (not scooping directly from the bag), and confirm your machine completed the full knead cycle. Temperature can also affect rise—very cold kitchens can slow yeast activity.
