Homemade Garlic Powder & Garlic Flakes

We use garlic in so many of our meals. We use both fresh garlic at times and garlic powder at times, it all depends on what we are making. A little, or a lot, of garlic powder, sprinkled over homemade french fries is delicious. Grab your dehydrator and make some with us!

Homemade Garlic Powder

I planted some of my own garlic this year, but nothing happened. Sad face. I will try again, I need to read more into growing garlic and find a better bulb/seed supplier for it. I would love to be able to grow enough garlic to keep us in garlic continuously. And we use a lot of it!

Growing enough of our own garlic each year to make our own garlic powder and garlic flakes would be amazing. Plus enough to produce more for the following year would be amazing.

We want to be self-sufficient, and this could be just another way to take a step in that direction.

So, this is easy to do. I would recommend getting a garlic slicer to help your fingers and keep your garlic slices even.

Peel and thinly slice the garlic into ⅛ inch pieces.

Place garlic slices onto dehydrator racks without overlapping pieces.

Dry garlic in a food dehydrator from 100 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit until slices are bone dry. They should snap crisply in half rather than bending.

Once fully dried, place the garlic in a blender or food processor and blend until:

  • a fine powder is achieved for garlic powder
  • small pieces for garlic flakes
  • leave them whole so you have options later on

Use a fine mesh strainer to sift the blended powder before placing it in storage containers. If there are leftover hard bits remaining, return these to the blender or food processor and grind them further into a powder.

Store your dehydrated garlic in airtight containers and use your garlic powder and garlic flakes within one year.
