What to Do During A Power Outage While Incubating Eggs

Incubating eggs is a delicate process that requires precise temperature and humidity control. However, unforeseen circumstances such as a power outage can disrupt this carefully regulated environment, potentially jeopardizing the development of the embryos.

Can Eggs Survive a Power Outage?

The survival of eggs during a power outage depends on several factors, including the duration of the outage and the developmental stage of the embryos.

Generally, fertilized eggs have a certain degree of resilience, but prolonged exposure to unfavorable conditions can be detrimental. After all, broody hens do get up from the eggs once in awhile too.

How Long Can Eggs Survive in an Incubator Without Power?

The timeframe during which eggs can endure a power outage without compromising their viability varies. In most cases, fertile eggs can tolerate a short-term power loss without significant harm.

However, the critical factor is the duration of the outage and the impact on temperature and humidity levels inside the incubator. A factor is the temperature in your house.

When it comes to hatching chickens, the optimal incubation temperature is around 99.5°F (37.5°C), with relative humidity levels ranging from 40% to 50%.

If the power outage is brief, lasting only a few minutes to an hour, the internal temperature of the incubator might not drop significantly. In such cases, the embryos may be able to withstand the temporary disruption.

However, if the power outage persists for an extended period, the internal temperature of the incubator will start to decrease, potentially harming the developing embryos. After a few hours without power, the risk of compromised hatch rates increases significantly.

What to Do Right Away When the Power Goes Out

Panicking will not resolve the issue. Take a deep breath and assess the severity of the power outage. I am the queen of action and panic. We get a lot of power outages here, so over the past few years I have gotten better at acting first and worrying about my hatch rate later on.

Preserve Heat

If the power outage is expected to be brief, keeping the incubator closed will help retain heat. Avoid opening of the incubator, as this can lead to further temperature loss, do not even open the incubator to turn the eggs.

Toss some blankets or towels over your incubator right away to help preserve the heat. Winter coats are great for this as well! I don't recommend wrapping it completely up, try to leave the air hole of your incubator clear.

Some incubators that are made with plastic also have styrofoam that is molded to the outside of the incubators. Not everyone leaves them on their incubators because they can hide the view of the eggs. If you have them, add them back to your incubator right away! I leave ours on during cooler hatching months just in case.

Implement Emergency Heating

If the power outage is prolonged, consider alternative heat sources. A battery-operated heat source or generator is a great option, not only for your incubator but also for your fridge or freezer.

Plan for Future Contingencies

Consider investing in backup power sources, such as generators or battery-powered incubators, to prevent similar issues in the future.

Backup Power Options

While power outages during egg incubation can be stressful, timely and informed actions can significantly increase the chances of a successful hatch. Understanding the resilience of eggs, monitoring conditions, and implementing measures to ensure the survival of the developing embryos.

By staying prepared and acting swiftly, you can navigate unexpected challenges and nurture the hatch.
